Bastl SoftPop II is a powerful and compact subtractive synthesizer, building on the success of the original SP1 unit to deliver improved sound design capabilities and a whole host more. Versatile and easy to use, SoftPop II is centred around subtractive analog modular synth architecture which provides a rich sound palette to create with. The beating heart of the SP2 is the fully analog architecture that provides that sought-after grit and warmth which cant be replicated by digital gear. Armed with this analog modular powerhouse, you can create everything from arpeggiated melodies to soaring leads and basslines. Combining the best of both world’s, the SP2 also features a complex digital sequencer (and quantizer) so you can create patterns and rhythms at the touch of a button.
From sound processing to step-sequences madness; the SP2 can do it all. Utilising the SP2 as a signal processor you can achieve a wide range of effects such as modulated overdrive, auto-wah, resonant distortion, sequenced ring-modulation, compression and a whole host more. It even has a temporary FX section and performance FX so you can sculpt and shape your sound to the max.
Complex by name, complex by nature. Although you are primarily presented with eight steps, you can extend your loops and sequences by using various Patterns. Patterns (eight per bank) can be chained and played in different orders, allowing you to create longer and more complex sequences. The eight steps are centred around loops of notes, gates and slides, allowing you to get creative when it comes to sequencing. It also boasts user-definable quantisation as well as eight playback modes and eight performance FX. You can use Scale chaining to create varying chord progressions or add some modulation using the Pitch Mod fader. You can also use the Temporary FX to create build-ups and transitions – great for live performances.
The thing that sets the SP2 apart from other synthesizers is its distinctive voice that extends beyond classic subtractive timbres. Providing you with a rich and diverse tonal palette, you can create virtually any sound you can think of. The analog triangle core oscillator boasts automatic digital tuning as well as envelope gates per step. The VCA can be toggled between envelope and drone modes, with the envelopes providing flexible attack-decay cycling with a wide range of control inputs. You can shape your tones further using the state variable resonant filter, allowing you to choose from lowpass, bandpass, and highpass modes for flexibility. Add some extra punch using the ‘Pop’ control for subtle distorted timbres.
No matter where you go, you can always have the SP2 at hand. The compact design combined with the USB power makes the SoftPop II one of the most powerful portable synthesizers on the market. From mains power to USB battery setups, you can easily power your synth wherever you go. It also excels when it comes to live performances thanks to the fader-based design allowing you to make quick adjustments on the fly.
Not only that, but the SP2 is jam-packed with connections, featuring 37 patch points in total which can also be used with Eurorack gear. The XY crossfader utility section and 4-way multiple allow for advancing patching capabilities. The synth also features an analog sync input and MIDI input for syncing and musical control.
