About Jones Reeds
Jones Double Reed Products began in the 1960s at the kitchen table of Dr Wendal Jones, who initially made reeds for his students at the University of Arizona. As demand grew among professional players and school music directors, Jones began developing specialist machinery to produce reeds more consistently and on a larger scale. The company has since combined purpose-built equipment and CNC technology with individual testing and hand-finishing, growing into one of the world’s largest producers of oboe and bassoon reeds.
Jones uses Arundo donax cane sourced predominantly from southern France and Mediterranean Spain. Specially developed machinery shapes and profiles the cane before each completed reed is tested and hand-finished, combining repeatable production with the final judgement of an experienced reed maker. Student reeds are designed for beginners during their first years of playing, while Artist models offer the response and tonal flexibility required by intermediate and advanced musicians. The two can also be identified by their thread colours, with red used for Student reeds and purple for Artist models.
By bringing specialist production and hands-on finishing together, Jones makes the notoriously individual world of double reeds more approachable for players at every stage.
